Outsider… Who? Me?!

I have been reading up quite a bit about the general attitude towards the Northeastern citizens of India. Over all there seems to be discontentment, anger, frustration, etc in all the blogs or articles I’ve read written by someone from this region or by some well wishers sometimes too! I too have written about it & discussed it countless times with friends and acquaintances. Then suddenly an odd realization jumped in! You know how wise men say that if you can’t accept yourself, you won’t have space in your hearts and minds to accept others… Well, this should hold true for the supposed sufferers and the supposed inflictors. I recollect being in Khwairamband bazaar (Imphal) quite some years ago where I had a conversation with this shopkeeper. He was Sikh & had been living in Imphal for many years. He made no qualms about poking fun of my terrible Manipuri language(Meiteilon) skills! But the fact is that he was more Meitei than I was. If you didn’t see his face, anyone could mistake him to be a native. Even his Hindi accent was like the rest of the locals! He said he lived in the city and not in the outskirts. This got me thinking… I don’t know of any non Manipuri neighbours! Did I have any? All my neighbours near my home in Imphal were Manipuris… No Bengalis, no Maharashtrians, no Assamese, no Tamilians, no Punjabis…only Meiteis! The non Manipuris were confined to the inner city limits where it’s over crowded like any other city centre would be. In fact theres a general hostility sometimes towards outsiders or Mayangs. The word Mayang means outsider & it is often used as a derogatory term. We are so hostile towards having other people come into our localities to settle…there aren’t many of them any way. So why is it then that when we go to other parts of the country, we expect they locals there to welcome us with open arms from day one! How is that possible now? Is it really a balanced view? Are we not taking up jobs & space in other parts of the country? Are we not taking up seats in universities across the nation as there are none or limited colleges / universities available in the NE region? If its fair that we occupy these educational and professional spots based on our qualifications & abilities, then we should take it upon ourselves also to show the locals of these other regions that we can mingle with them & become part of the overall productive community. Perhaps we can all learn a thing or two from the Parsi community. Story goes that when the Zohrastrians first landed in India, they were accepted into the community as their leader clearly stated to the local ruler that they’d settle there & enrich the land just like how a spoon of sugar enriches a cup of milk!

The regional hostility is something thats not a very different story in other parts of NE India…in fact it is the same story right across the length & breadth of our country. The news media is constantly showing us how some communities are fighting sometimes vigorously so to keep their communities free of outsiders. Everywhere you go, you can see it happening. In some parts of Mumbai, non-vegetarians aren’t allowed to rent property in Jain/Gujarati dominated areas. Southern India is still wary of northern Indians who come to settle there…  There are so many of such cases that I’m confident I could write a book on each region of India & perhaps this one life time wouldn’t be enough for it. This hostility is lesser now in urban areas but the feeling of being suspicious of outsiders still remains in most rural areas. It is just part of our national DNA I guess and History has given us enough reasons to be this way.

So what.

I don’t support discrimination against any community based on their religion or color or race, let alone cultural practices. I’m not learned enough or qualified enough or God to make these judgements. From my own experience I’ve learnt that the day I stopped seeing myself as an outsider, I was welcome everywhere and I ceased being a ‘chinky’ and became an Indian. My curiosity about other cultures led me to mingle with the people of other communities and not just my ‘types’ and I’ve met so many truly amazing people. Till the time my friends understood or knew about my cultural heritage they too were wary of me, as was I of them but once that bridge was crossed there was no looking back. The friendships I have gained can be termed as nothing short than amazing! I’ve learned so much from my friends from across the country & we still continue to learn from each other. They are as amazed by Northeastern india as I am as I’m yet to physically discover each and every corner of this fantastic region. In fact there’s so much to learn from every part of the country. I love that everywhere you go in India, each city, each village has something unique to offer. It could be the language, the dress, the music, the religion, history, cuisine… Oh my goodness the cuisine across the country is so amazing. Its a pity that the rest of the world hasn’t yet discovered the stunning diversity of cuisine completely. We are so uniquely diverse yet so similar in a thousand  lovely ways. Instead of shunning our differences, we should be celebrating them and rejoicing our similarities. Then and only then will we cease to be outsiders amongst our own people & our true potential as a nation be realized.

Often I’ve wondered how life would be
If we had all the things we always wanted
If all our dreams always came true
And our prayers answered every time we prayed
It sounds like the perfect place to be
But is it really as perfect as I want it to be
I’d rather have the occasional heartache
The brickbats and the surprise accolade
Than to never fully appreciate
How perfect the imperfections make our life
How we are made stronger through our strife
How a loss makes you feel gratitude for
All the things that are at your door…
I’ll live each day with all I have & with my all
And believe that the future will unfold as its meant to be
That the past is only a small line in the annals of history.

The Wedding
Acrylic & Faber Castell Pitt Pens on canvas – 24” x 18”

There’s something absolutely magical about the way in which puppeteers from Rajasthan bring simple stories to life. There’s so much colour, music & festivities that it sweeps you away in its crescendos! I just couldn’t resist painting a scene from one of the shows I had seen earlier last year in a small heritage village in India.

************************
We live in a minuscule pale dot in the universe fighting for every minuscule inch of terra firma & every resource. Every drop of water precious & each millimeter of land essential. We don’t have anywhere else to go or won’t find another place for god knows how long… & if we do who’s to say if the inhabitants of that planet would like aliens to invade their home! We certainly don’t seem to like the idea ourselves…we can’t have anyone invade our houses let alone an entire planet.
There’s immense beauty & equal amounts of destruction amidst us. Only one species equivocally has stressed this giant rock & water mass so much that it has made extinct several species of flora & fauna. And strangely enough this species has also been blessed with this intelligence to recreate or clone all the species that are dead and gone. Despite all this intelligence & awareness there are few amongst this populace who are so blinded with their beliefs that they never realise how short this life time really is to be fighting these bloody wars & how fragile this system really is.
If we could all at least once a day take the time to sit back and look at how insignificant the rat race is..how mundane the madness for material wealth.. How futile the mindless illusion of power! None of it is going to travel with you to wherever once you’re dead & gone and your body is fertilising the earth or turned into ashes and we will all become part of the earth again.

Eternally the song of the wind will go on
Long after I’m gone
Long after life ceases to exist
The wind song will go on…

This Krishna is very special to me as I had the most wonderful time creating it. It now resides in its new residence at the Iyengar family’s lovely apartment in London and it looks like its found its way home somehow! I’ll post pictures of the framed painting in the apartment soon.

How odd that these two action heroes have decided to restart their careers looking exactly the same – super toned new bodies, sunglasses, the police get up, the mooshie moustache…. Whoooaaaaaa… where’s the originality gone… but then perhaps thats expecting too much. Besides they are more suited for these new make-overs. Sadly they both chose to act opposite young stars who are half their age..tch tch tch.

New Old Trends?

Who’s mimicking who? There will still only be one RAJNIKANTH… everyone else somehow fall short! Sadly none of these other ‘older’ male superstars like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan or the great Amitabh Bachan can ever come quite as close to the man Rajnikanth himself! MIND IT!!!!

Draw a map of India on paper. Now carefully cut it out making sure every coast & border is neatly cut. Hold it up from the top. See how the NE bit hangs dangerously almost sagging & cut off from the main body of the rest of the map! That’s probably closest to how this region feels – hanging loosely & about to be cut off any moment! The narrowest bit struggles desperately to keep it together. On scale that bit is less than 25kms at it’s narrowest. I sometimes wonder if it hadn’t been for the oil & tea, would the erstwhile Indian government have included it in it’s territories?
Interestingly enough this region which was once mostly rainforest with a few scatterings of permanent settlement is struggling to maintain it’s identity whilst also trying to take unto itself the challenges of the ever changing economics & technologies of the globe. Perhaps its own past is also what is responsible for it’s slow growth. As a tribal community much of the population is coming out of it’s traditional beliefs & ideologies. It’s not a very recent past when there were many tribes that were warring with each other to gather all the resources they needed to survive. That need has been diminished as goods are brought in from the heartlands by road, rail & air. Of course that ideology still prevents quite a few parts from receiving resources easily with roadblocks, raids etc coming in the way! The Ahoms fight the Bodos & Meiteis with Nagas etc etc
We only seem to make matters worse for ourselves with all the bloodshed & violence. Instead of blaming the central government, we should take matters in our own hands! If for just a year all the insurgents give up arms & focus on creating socio-economic resources, one can only imagine what amazing things can happen!
We are still at war with each other when we should be actually coexisting which is far more beneficial economically! Imagine if there was smooth movement of goods & services to all parts of the NE.. We’d have fantastic tourist destinations, crazy colourful traditional & music festivals! There’d be rail & road development & India too could boast of world class highways on the mountains.. We could have excellent schools & colleges thanks to the wealth of knowledge that lies dormant & waiting to be put to use! And we’d have world class health centres that’d make the region ideal for medical tourism! & we’d bring forth sportspeople who’d break new world records in every international venue!!!
My thoughts are very utopian perhaps but the sheer thought of these possibilities makes my heart soar for I can see the wealth of amazing things that can happen. I hope and pray that this vision gets shared amongst my country folk too.
